You do not want the designer to be constantly around you, over your shoulder every minute of the whole process. But, if you can take halts after a certain process is completed and discuss with your designer and scriptwriter about it then it would be great. As the designer can help your scriptwriter by telling what is effective for the script and also the scriptwriter will help the designer by guiding him on how the content should be executed. If something in the script is not appropriate for the motion graphic, you can cut it out beforehand rather than investing time in something that won’t work or ending up with a low-quality product at the end.
Remember that it is Not Just About Words
You may prepare a script that you could read out easily and that cover all the bases, but for a motion graphic, you do not need to cover all the bases in detail. A picture can speak a thousand words when created the right way. A motion graphic can fill a ton of information into a very small space. So, leave some space for images and focus on what is absolutely necessary to be said.
Do Not Script the Visuals too Thoroughly, Though
Do not do so at least before discussing it with your designer. What actually sounds amazing in your head might not portray the same in the graphic. Also, you might not communicate properly what exactly you are visualizing in your head anyway. It is good to get suggestions from here and there but, the only person who can work the best on this is your designers, you just need to give them space to work.
Keep it Simple
It is not necessary that if you have a script of two minutes in your hand, you need to make a two-minute long video. Graphics are the best way to spread the idea across, but people need time to absorb this idea and the words can sometimes be the reason for distraction. It might seem little small or thin when your scriptwriter writing the script but trust your designers. The designers can make use of all the simplicity to create something more interesting and effective.
Make it a Multi-step Process
Ask your scriptwriter to write a rough script and share it with your designer for making a storyboard. Then you can comment on the storyboard, see where and what changes are to be made, you can suggest something new, or even rearrange the script. When you work together as a team, you will notice it yourself how the things work and this gives you plenty of chances to see what is working right and what is not.
Tell a Story
You do not need to get all creative about this, but a motion graphic needs some sort of narration. An introduction- to set the stage for the information to follow. A middle- to convey people everything you want them to know. An end- which wraps everything and demonstrate the people where to go next. Obviously, you want people to learn something from your motion graphic so, in order to do so you need to communicate well and a story is the best way to grab people’s attention. Doodle it Out
When you have a clear idea of what your motion graphic needs to say, and look like, it is better to doodle it out like your own storyboard. This will help your graphic designer understand where you are going, even if you cannot draw anything better than a stick figure. It can be much easier to understand an idea by sketching it out and how to illustrate it. It may not be obvious to the designer what you are trying to convey but a drawing works much better than a written paragraph.
